Monthly Archives: January 2012

What I Learned Last week in WWD – Jan. 22

  • Counterfeit apparel was #1 on the list of things seized by the feds in 2011. The estimated suggested retail price of the apparel seized amounted to $126.2 million. Fake handbags ranked 4th and accounted for 10% of the goods confiscated. China remains the #1 source of the counterfeit goods.
  • Last week was Berlin Fashion week Jan. 17th-22nd!
  • Riccardo Tisci’s latest collection for Givenchy is an accumulation of his biggest hits from the past seven years at the house. I love this mixed

  • Isaac Mizrahi is launching a baby’s line for newborns and infants. The 25-piece collection will be sold in department stores and some specialty boutiques.
  • An article highlighted some up-and-coming designer talent coming out of China. I’d love to own this black and taupe diamond piece.

  • Target is set to unveil its latest “The Shops at Target” concept in the beginning of May. The “Shops” include Apple (in select stores), a candy store, cosmetics bar, dog bakery, home products, and luxury apparel/jewelry/accessories
  • Another Pre-Fall Look I Like: Chloe

  • Fashion Meets Politics – With the Presidential race picking up, designers are showing support for their candidates during their road to the White House.
    • The designers backing Obama include Marc Jacobs, Tory Burch, DvF, Rag & Bone, Narciso Rodriguez, Jason Wu, Tracy Reese, Alexander Wang and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.
    • Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum’s signature style is his sweater vest. Supporters can donate $100.00 to his campaign and receive a sweater vest just like his.  Maybe supporters will get the chance to wear it to the polls on voting day.

Tons of Texture

When putting together this particular outfit all I thought about was combining a mixture of materials.

(Free People top & lace blazer, Urban Outfitters scarf, Levi’s denim, Steve Madden boots)

I started off with a taupe cotton top that has an intricate twisted-fabric detailing across the front. Then, layered over that is a forest green lace blazer. Draped across the shoulders is a floral print silk scarf with a threaded-tassel border. And finally, strung around the neck is a knotted single-strand ivory beaded necklace.

The collection of cloth on the top half is paired with some dark denim skinny jeans, while brown leather-and-suede riding boots finish off the look and add even more texture to the bottom half of the outfit.

What do you think? Would you wear this?

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

In the midst of the Winter Storm Warning that is currently in-effect here in Chicago, and expected to dump several inches of snow over the next several hours, I wanted to find out what type of snow boots you rely on to trek through the snow blankets that cover our sidewalks.

Do you rely on your spring rain boots a few months early to protect you from the mushy slush?

Are you among the Ugg obsessed?

Are you channeling your childhood with a pair of the Original Moon Boots; fun, fluffy, and functional?

Are you fashionable, yet fully-functional; wearing fur-trimmed boots that are still stylish while having a rubber-rim that resist the snow drifts?

Do you channel you furry friends and protect yourself with your own pretend paws?

Snowboots? Who needs snowboots? Do you skip the extra pair and stick with the same thing you will be wearing all day long?

Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow!

Fashion has a Mind of its Own…Literally

I like this look for a day out-and-about because it’s fun, trendy and creatively put together for a casual day running around the city.

Often time’s people don’t put much effort into what they wear on their days off so they just throw on sweats to clean the house or do their errands. When it comes to this, I like to think of my version of the saying “You are what you eat” – that being, “You are what you wear.”

Think about it.

If you wake up and wear your pajamas all day you are most likely going to feel frumpy and have a low energy level. In reverse, if you put on a skin tight sexy dress for a Saturday night out; but you tend to wear things that are more slouchy, you are probably going to be fidgeting all night long and look uncomfortable. But, if you take the time to get ready for the day and put effort into an outfit that resembles your personal style I bet you will be more productive and feel confident in your own skin.

For this particular outfit, I paired an abstract anatomy graphic print tee with a pair of Nordic print wool shorts. Since its winter, I obviously embraced the shorts with tights trend to stay warm and completed the look with my brand new burgundy leather boots. (Side note: I have been searching for burgundy leather boots ALL season long and I finally found the perfect pair at Urban Outfitters for $19.99…originally $128.00. Score!)

I like the ease this ensemble gives off, but in reality it’s well-thought out; using the shorts as the statement piece in which the outfit revolves around. The taupe top, tan cardigan, charcoal stocking, and burgundy boots all pull from hues within the rich jewel tones in the shorts.

What do you wear when you’re not working?

A Little of What I Learned from my First Week of WWD

Here’s what I learned last week in Women’s Wear Daily…

  • Balenciaga’s designer Nicolas Ghesquiere looks back to “Eighties nightclubbing” for influence using black leather, shiny disco fabrics and bold graphic animal prints in the pre-fall collection.

  • AllSaints brand was rescued from financial ruin by two private equity firms (caught me by surprise – they opened up a beautiful brand new store in Chicago last year)
  • David Beckham is collaborating with retailer H&M to create a bodywear line inspired by his style. Products hit stores on Feb 2, as well as his promotional advertising…nothing like looking at a little eye candy while you’re out-and-about shopping.

  • Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz is experimenting with new sewing techniques, shapes and fabrics for the line’s pre-fall collection. Designs show of exposed darts & seams and are created from a unique combination of bonded cotton gabardine and patent leather – like this dress & trench set.

  • Most stores reported positive sales compared to last year, but in retrospect may not have gained this Holiday season based on still large inventory levels and large markdown discounts. Retailers who performed strong in December: Nordstrom, Saks, Apple TJX, & Limited Brands (especially Victoria’s Secret). Retails with sales disapointments: GAP, Target, Sears, Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale. The verdict is still out – depends on how many people cash in on their gift cards & make returns throughout the months of January & February. Will you be spending or saving the next two months?
